about

'Places' is the follow-up to Stuart MacRae's first album of piano Improvisations, 'Delicacy'. In 'Places' the tracks chosen were, again, all improvised at a single sitting, without much forethought or premeditation, but responding to the instant. Some of them are inspired by places (for example 'A Shetland Monody' which was recorded in Lerwick, or the two garden pieces 'A corner of the garden' and 'My garden in June' which were written immediately after contemplations in the composer's garden). The styles are varied, but mainly muted, gentle and meditative in character, drawing subtly on the composer's love of folk music and jazz as well as the classical piano repertoire, sometimes evoking Rachmaninoff, Janacek, or Keith Jarrett.
